Using Munsell Color Notation in Conservation Documentation
A Shared Color Language
When a conservation report describes a textile's color as "5YR 6/4," any trained conservator anywhere can visualize that color. No monitor calibration required, no ambiguity about what "warm pinkish-brown" means.
The Munsell System Basics
Hue divides the color wheel into 10 families (R, YR, Y, GY, G, BG, B, PB, P, RP), each subdivided 1-10. Value describes lightness from 0 (black) to 10 (white). Chroma describes saturation from 0 (neutral gray) outward. Format: Hue Value/Chroma.
Why Munsell Works for Degraded Pigments
Low chroma. Faded pigments have reduced intensity. Munsell's chroma scale captures "barely colored" precisely. Hue shifts are tracked as specific notation changes. Value changes from darkening or lightening are captured independently.
Practical Techniques
- Always compare to physical chips, not memory
- Use consistent D65 lighting
- Assess hue, value, and chroma independently in three steps
- Interpolate when needed
- Note metamerism under different illuminants
- Document your Munsell edition
Limitations
Discrete chip sampling requires interpolation. Surface properties differ between chips and textiles. Observer variation of 1-2 Munsell units is typical. No spectral information is captured.
Munsell and Instruments Together
Best practice: provide both Munsell notation and Lab* values. They validate each other and serve different purposes — Munsell for quick visual reference, Lab* for precise numerical communication.
Munsell in Degradation Modeling

Models can output predictions in Munsell notation for quick comparison against physical assessment. The comparison loop — model prediction in Munsell, physical assessment in Munsell, adjust model — is intuitive and fast.
Common Munsell Ranges for Degraded Textiles
- Faded reds: 5R-10YR, value 6-8, chroma 2-6
- Faded blues: 5B-5PB, value 5-8, chroma 2-6
- Oxidized indigo: 5Y-5GY, value 4-6, chroma 2-4
- Aged yellows: 5Y-10YR, value 7-9, chroma 2-4
- Iron-mordanted degradation: 5YR-10YR, value 3-5, chroma 2-4
