Case Study: Restoring a 1905 Ballets Russes Costume Fragment
A 1905 Ballets Russes silk fragment arrived at the archive with its Bakst-designed turquoise almost completely reversed to grey-green — a collapse that had gone undocumented for decades. Reconstructing the designer's color intent required separating photochemical fade from the secondary shift caused by early carbon arc footlights, two processes that look identical to the naked eye. This case study traces the Fadeboard session that untangled both channels and produced a restoration target the loaning institution accepted on the first review.
